The Zordon fanpage on Facebook is holding a contest and it's to answer the question What emotionally attached you to the Power Rangers show and Why do you love it so much?
That got me to blushingly chuckle and to do a little soul searching and well, my first reply is "do you really want to know?" The short answer is I had a horrible childhood and PR was an escape. But the long answer... well... here's my story. The history of Jessica Zordon Spock.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came out in 1993. I was going on 10 years old (I'm 30 years old now) and in Mrs Welch's 4th grade class at West Elementary, the kids had been talking about this cool new tv show called Power Rangers. I had never heard of it and that day at 5pm I tuned into Fox to watch Batman the animated series, come to find out that Batman had been moved to 4:30 and the Power Rangers was shown at 5. The episode was Island of Illusion. The Rangers were trapped on this island and would disappear if they lost all their confidence. They called on a character named Quagmire who helped them remember moments where they were at their best. I was intrigued,
What hooked me on Power Ranger's I'll never truly know, but my favorite character at the time was Zordon or Zorgon as I called him. I didn't know his name at the time. Zordon, if you read this, you are the best the Rangers ever had. I had two very close friends at the time (we're friends here on FB) and even they didn't quite understand my love for the show. I was teased and tormented at school and at home, my life was a living hell. I would watch Power Rangers and feel a bond with the team. I hooked my mom on the show and her favorite character was the Green Ranger. Tommy Oliver, she really likes the Green Ranger Mini-series. My dad was an @$%^$%#%^$%^
I would daydream that I was my own Ranger, Jessica, the Purple/Hotpink Ranger, that had a special bond with Zordon. In my stories, Jessica and Tommy were chosen by Rita to destroy Zordon, My OC (as I would learn that term many years later) discovered that she was from the planet Antario, Antarians and Eltarians are genetically compatable...
Suffice it to say I was growing up yet I'll be the first to admit it, when I was about 11 or 12 I developed a crush on Zordon. Favorite characters get special treatment, favorite male characters more so. A relationship between Zordon & the Hotpink ranger (my OC after Tommy Oliver became the White Ranger) eventually developed. Power Rangers somewhat dovetailed with what was going on in my life at that time (certain characters left only to be replaced by lesser quality versions)
When Andros shattered Zordon's energy tube, my heart was shattered as well. I was a freshman in high school and had missed the last band review of that season. Ask those that know me, I cried for days. Captain Spock said it best in Star Trek The Wrath of Khan (1982)The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one. Andros is still my least favorite ranger.
okay, by now we've established that this fan was emotionally attached to the character Zordon.
But why I love the series? Over all I had a hellish childhood and seeing people transform into superheroes and fight bad guys was really cool. I felt a connection with the team and ultimately wanted to study martial arts (a goal that was completed in 2003 when began studying Aikido/ Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu under Sensei Delina Fuchs) I'm currently a Gokyu in the AJJF. I refer to my Sensei as Zordon because she bestowed upon me Jujitsu & Aikido.
