Tis a gift to be simple....
Tis a gift to give your director a carmel apple made by your own hands.
Dr. Tevis is nice, a showman, and a screwball. I wish that he could meet Sensei Delina.
don't get me wrong, I love my Sensei. I've been training off & on for nine years, and right now life is a little bit busy for me to train in Jujitsu, yet in my honest opinion the best conductors should know some of the esoteric principles of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. It's evident that the two can blend together.
For example: the younger the ensemble the more outrageous the stick must move. In Jujitsu, when training white belts or those below you in rank, your kata should have wider movements.
Okay, so the ensemble shouldn't have to bow before the conductor, but you know what I mean.
What I learned today was that the conductor & ensemble should trust each other. When the musicians trust the conductor trust each other, then that's when the music is truly brought to fruition. I'm not in the conducting class, but I'm kinda curious about what it's like to conduct & maybe it'll help me with my confidence issues. I'll admit it, when I was in 6th grade I had a secret fantasy that I was a band director, leading an orchestra.
I wonder if by playing in a university concert band, am I getting a piece of what Ms Appling (7th grade symphonic band director) was learning. IDK what it is, but when there was a carmel apple making booth today, I made one and gave it as a gift to Dr. Tevis. (I tried to write his name in musical notation on the envelope) I gave it to him after rehearsal this afternoon & he was floored. He said he'll eat it on friday. I honestly don't care when he eats it, I thought of him while making it & I hope he enjoys it.
He's been really nice to me this semester. He was understanding when both of my furry sons died. RIP Gatomon & Mittens. I <3 u. Also I like his style. It kinda reminds me of Brassman Guidry. Coming from me, that's high praise. I'm not a fangirl of his by any means. He's not Pharaoh Atemu, Phoenix Wright, Nephrite, Spock, or Zordon.
This semester I was seriously considering having this be my last semester in band, but now I'm not so sure about that. I really enjoyed class this afternoon. It's slightly unnerving sitting right next to Dr. Tevis, but I think it's getting better. Either that or I'm (can't believe I'm saying this) starting to enjoy my part. there are certain places in the music that I can nail. And surprisingly some of the pieces were some that I've played while in LP/O band. memories of a bygone era.
